Protected Apps on the Market

have been reading this thread in the google support forums and it seems the milestone can't see protected apps.

 can anyone from expansys confirm?

I too am interested in a response. If it turns out there is no access to protected apps I would have no choice but to cancel my preorder.

I know someone that has a sim free version of the German Milestone, and can access all paid for content on the Market place. I assume 'protected' means 'stuff that you have to pay for'?

copy protection is seperate from paid apps, even if an app is free the dev can enable protected mode in the app.

if the phone hasn't been whitelisted the app won't appear in the market so may not notice unless you tried downloading an app you bought on a different phone or read about an app that interests you.

Wow!  That's really appalliing.  I'll wait for updates on this but I'm not liking the fact that the only options for buying this phone are now meaning anyone who wants it can't get to use everything that is supposed to be available for milestone users.  Particularly if going with the bundle option because you're still signing a contract, it's just that the phone doesn't have a T-Mobile branding.  ...We're already not being given google turn-by-turn navigation and now more things that we can't use?

Really not sure what google is thinking about doing this course of action.

EDIT: Just did a quick search and found this article.  So now I'm wondering if it's only developer unlocked phones that are blocked from the protected apps, or if all unlocked phones are?

Article Quote:

When asked for confirmation on the change, a Google employee noted: "If you're using an unlocked, developer phone, you'll be unable to view any copy protected application. This is a chance that was made recently."

I also have a pre-order and am interested to find out if this problem applies to the Milestones that expansys are supplying.  If it can't access all the market apps, It will be going back.

its not just developer phones, when the hero was out people had to complain to the carrier to get them to sort out the problem with google, one day google flipped the switch and hero users could see all the apps.

luckly i have a rooted G1 so i can buy apps protected or not and copy them out of the system and install on the milestone so banning dev phones never got them very far.

EDIT : another milestone market thread here.

I'm in the same boat... I did just phone Motorola however, and they seemed to think that the Apps store would indeed be partially crippled, however this was due to experience from their Germany release. They were not able to say for certain if the UK models would suffer from this, however Motorola escalated the case, and they will apparently get back to me soon after the weekend.

Yes, it sounds like SIM free handsets have to "whitelisted" individually for Android market, for whatever reason and they aren't too good at keeping this up to date.

Hopefully since the Milestone will ONLY be available SIM free in the UK, Motorola will apply some pressure on the Android Market admin team otherwise it could be embarrassing for them when members of the press review the device...

I agree. In fact I'd be happier about keeping the Milestone than any other Android device with this issue, as it is exclusively SIM free. The issue should be most obvious with the German userbase, as all German phones are unlocked by default.

Hopefully the device can be whitelisted soon.

"Regarding your recent query, we would like to inform you that at the moment it is not possible to access protected applications on Google Market Place. This issue does not not affect only the UK Milestone as it is something to do with the way Google Market Place has been developed. Unfortunately we do not know if Google will address this issue and, therefore, we kindly suggest you to contact Google through their support forum"

 so motorola can't do anything.

We have looked in to this and can confirm that the Milestone units being shipped to Expansys will be able to download paid for applications from the market place and access all Google services and applicaitons.

paid apps are seperate from copy protected apps, the protection can be enabled regardless of being paid or free.

these protected apps won't show up in the market leaving only free/paid unprotected apps.

EDIT

looking in app-private on my rooted G1 i can see : retro defence, mybackuppro, picsay pro , snapphoto pro and pure calendar.

could someone from expansys (if they have a unit to hand) check to see if these are on the market, if they don't appear were locked out of protected apps.

We only have pre production units here at the moment, which may not be the same as the expected units.

Give me a nudge once the stock has landed and I will check for you.
